Oral airways, also known as OPA or oropharyngeal airway is a medical device used to open the airway of an unconscious person. This emergency airway management has to be done only on unconscious persons. It is because when a person is unconscious, the jaw muscles relax obstructing the airway, which could turn fatal.
How to Use the Oral Airway?
The unconscious person should be first laid on his/her back. Next insert the J-tube pointing it towards the roof of the mouth. It should be gently pushed half-way into the mouth. Care should be taken to ensure that the tongue is not pushed to the back. Then, the oral airway should be rotated 180 degrees so that it faces down towards the trachea. During the entire process, pressure should not be applied, which could hurt the unconscious person. Oral airways should not be taped as the patient may gag or vomit as soon as he/she regains consciousness.
How to Calculate the Right Size of the J-tube?
It is very important that the right sized oral airways are inserted into the patient’s mouth. While a small tube could prove ineffectual, a long one could obstruct the airway. To choose the correct sized oropharyngeal airway, measure the length from corner of the patient’s mouth to the tip of the earlobe.
